U got the ‘look’

Thanks to @SJIHolliday, I’ve been tagged in this blog game which involves searching your current WIP for the word ‘look’ and posting the surrounding paragraphs (then tagging another 5 writers to do the same – the WIP can be a short story, a poem, a novel, whatever you’ve got…)

I decided to post a small section from the opening of my recently completed YA supernatural novel, ‘Open Wounds’:


Sophie Kelly sat up and shifted her seventeen year old shape out from under the duvet and made her way to the bathroom.

 The reflection that stared back at her from the bathroom mirror didn’t look like it should have belonged to a young girl. The eyes were sore and dark underlined, like someone who had witnessed a lifetime of suffering, far more than could have been seen or felt in just seventeen years.

 ‘Just whose pain am I feeling?’ she wondered, as she splashed cold water onto her face. ‘And when will it end?’
